Edo Izakaya Japanese Restaurant, Old Street
Japanese Restaurant in Old Street
Edo Izakaya is a Japanese restaurant in Old Street, only a short walk from Shoreditch, Barbican and Liverpool Street. In true izakaya style, it is relaxed and informal serving up a variety of delicious dishes. The name is taken from the comes from the Edo period of Japan (1603-1867) when izakaya’s began to become prominent. It’s also from the owners of Robata, which is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Soho.
The cocktails deserve a special mention – they were some of the very best I have had in a restaurant. The signature cocktails were beautifully presented and had a delicate taste:
- Ginza Sour – Roku gin, plum sake, elderflower syrup, apple juice, lemon juice & egg white
- Murasaki Ryu – Roku gin, luxardo maraschino, dragon fruit syrup, lemon, basil & egg white
The menu is handily split into different sections – sashimi, raw, rolls, bao buns, small and large plates and salads. It’s great if you are in a group and can share lots of dishes. Our highlights were:
- Volcano Rolls: snow crab, prawn tempura, avocado, asparagus, tenkatsu, tobiko & volcano sauce
- Ebi Tempura – prawn, paprika, sriracha mayo
- Chicken Karaage – chicken thigh, spicy mayo & lime
- Ribeye Bao Buns pickled daikon, cucumber & truffle ponzu
