Things to do in Windsor and Eton

Windsor is only a 25 minute train journey from London Paddington so easily accessible for a day trip or overnight stay. We visited for the Christmas festivities on a crisp sunny winter day!

The parking is limited in the Windsor area (and expensive) so we would recommend getting the train which is only ￡12.20 (single journey).

Things to do in Windsor & Eton

There are plenty of things to do in Windsor & Eton for a day or weekend.

Windsor Castle

The glorious Castle has been home to British kings and queens for over 1,000 years. The castle (and land surrounding it) spans 13 acres, making it the largest and oldest occupied Castle in the world. There is always the small chance that you will see the Queen – if the flag is flying from the Castle’s Round Tower, she is there!

You can’t miss the castle as you exit Windsor & Eton Central station and make sure you put aside 2-3 hours to visit the whole Castle and grounds as there is lot to explore. Don’t miss Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House – a miniature replica of a 1920s mansion complete with electricity and running water. Ticket prices are steep at ￡30 so look out for 2 for 1 tickets to save a bit of cash.

Windsor Great Park: Long Walk

The Long Walk is a three-mile-long, tree-lined thoroughfare which goes from the Copper Horse statue of George III in the park all the way to Windsor Castle. This is where the royal processions happen after weddings! It was a little cold to walk the whole three miles but I can’t wait to return in the summer to see the red deer that roam the park and the gorgeous waterfalls and gardens.

Eton college and High Street

I thought that Windsor and Eton were further apart but they are literally split by one bridge.

Eton historic High Street is gorgeous with many antique shops and art galleries to explore. Don’t forget to sample Eton fudge! Keep an eye out for the schoolboys in tailcoats walking through the town.

You can wander around the outside of Eton College but they only run tours on Friday afternoons.
